Why did you decide to make use of a Study Coach? To find out if I would be able to cope with working and studying at the same time, I wanted the help of someone with experience who could give me professional feedback. That’s why I was so happy when I found out I would have the support of a Study Coach.
What did the Study Coach support you with in particular? What really supported me were the regular phone calls which helped me not to lose sight of my targets. My Study Coach and I drew up this plan.
What benefits do you think a personal advisory service provides in general? Because every person is different, it’s good to have a personal and – especially for distance learners – accessible contact who shows an interest in your personal situation. Having a personal advisory service definitely makes you feel very valued.

Why did you decide to make use of a Study Coach?
As soon as I decided to study alongside my job, I knew that I’d like some support to help me sort all the thoughts I had about how to approach studying. The main thing that concerned me was how to guarantee the progress I wanted to see over the course of my studies. It’s really helpful to have a sparring partner to prevent you racing through your
degree at full speed and, instead, help you to focus on yourself and organise your study programme step by step.
What did the Study Coach support you with in particular?
What I found most impressive was the support I was given in organising my own study programme. It was really helpful to have continuous and supportive encouragement to structure the modules I had planned. My Study Coach guided me straightforwardly and promptly through the systems, and I had the information I needed to study part-time at my fingertips.
What benefits do you think a personal advisory service provides in general?
I think the personal advisory service is a great additional offering, and I would recommend it unreservedly. Thanks to the continuous support I received and the regular exchange of information, I was able to start the following semester without any doubts.

Studying pays off: What our graduates have to say

"The practical relevance of the degree programme was impressive. The lecturers clearly explained which knowledge is relevant for which tasks or situations."
After completing her bachelor’s degree in aviation management, IU alumna Julia Fuchs worked in various positions in the aviation industry. She has now returned to Lufthansa Cargo, her former employer from her internship semester.
Variety in the workday: between process optimisation, moderation, and IT training
In my area of work, I am responsible for subprojects of larger projects. This includes a diversity of tasks such as classic process analysis and it corresponding process re-structuring, the testing of IT as well as the introduction of new IT programmes from the technical side. After developing the concept I initiate process adjustments with the department, work out IT adjustments in collaboration with the responsible departments, and prepare the tests and training programmes for the users, some of which I teach myself. The exciting part about the job is that finding solutions to complex problems is as much a part of my work as leading theoretical discussions, facilitating meetings, and unifying many different parties around one topic. I am practically involved with the entire cycle of my subproject, identify areas for improvement and, in collaboration with all relevant departments, develop a future scenario.
Well prepared by the academic content and training of soft skills at IU
I learned many of the skills I need for my job during my studies at IU. This includes for example, how to understand new topics quickly, and how to work with different kinds of people yet still reach a well-thought-out result. Thanks to the degree programme, I also know where to find up-to-date information about the industry, industry standards, industry pioneers, and long-term trends. Computer training and project management courses also prepared me well for my professional work. Overall, I think the practical relevance of the degree programme was impressive. The lecturers clearly explained which knowledge is relevant for which situations or tasks. This enables me to consistently apply what I learned to my professional work.

"Especially the fundamentals lectures gave me great tools for daily business."
IU alumnus Bastian Mahmoodi went into business right after his studies. He established the company Innozation GmbH, which is devoted to the highly topical issue of the shortage of skilled workers in Germany. As a managing partner he heads the company and creates an alternative to classical personnel placement.
We use Big Data and specially developed software to provide IT specialists from the Middle East access to medium-sized companies.
The business idea for the realization of Innozation - enabling mutual access to specialists abroad and middle-class enterprises by means of a platform and purposeful services - developed when I observed the systemic deficits regarding the immigration of specialists from abroad in the example of an own family member. Skilled workers abroad cannot find a central place to turn to when they start to toy with the idea of emigrating to Germany and authorities often refuse to respond in English. However, Germany is increasingly dependent on skilled workers from abroad, especially small and medium-sized enterprises that need them to develop innovations. With our "VisaBee" service, we at Innozation are the interface between all stakeholders involved in immigration. We use intelligent databases and algorithms to do so. We thus enable access for German medium-sized businesses to matching specialists from abroad. What is special about the concept: We link and evaluate all relevant data from the past and present, entirely in the sense of “Big Data”, which in turn means lower-risk immigration for applicants and companies. We are familiar with the risk potential of such immigration and strive to exclude it from the start.
Studies at the IU prepares for the processes in globally active companies
What especially helps me in my work from my studies: All study aspects surrounding interculturalism built bridges for me in thinking globally in lots of ways. The pointed preparation at the IU for the processes of an internationally operating company conveyed the big picture to me. Especially the fundamentals lectures on the topics of research, science, and marketing gave me great tools to be able to assess questions in daily business.
My personal milestone: Bayerische Beteiligungsgesellschaft funds applicant
At the company, we are currently facing the roll-out phase and are completing the final software development. My tasks include keeping within all plans such as the financial framework and reaching the strategic goals, as well as specific scheduling. What I am especially proud of: Since its foundation, we have received state funding from the Bayerische Beteiligungsgesellschaft (BayBG), where only three percent of founders who apply with their concept receive funding. In addition, we have achieved further critical milestones: Furnished the offices and hired the first colleague.
Now my top priority is developing and evolving the company with the corresponding growth. This includes the increase of customers but also developing new markets through new services and products. Exciting times lie ahead!

"The university teaching at IU is characterised by a high degree of practical relevance."
From Bolivia and Germany to Doha: IU alumna Diana Valdez ventured abroad to study and discover a new culture. She now works in Doha as Pricing Analyst at Qatar Airways.
Three birds with one stone: high-quality academics, internationality and a well-established network
This decision has paid off for me in every respect: not only because of the opportunity to discover a new culture and thus further realise my potentials but also because of the high-quality academics and internationality at IU. The teaching is characterised by a high degree of practical relevance. The main focus is on finding solutions to cases and on critical analysis of the development of new approaches. Students are encouraged to be creative and to directly apply what is taught. Additionally, the students as well as a large proportion of the professors and lecturers come from different parts of the world, which generates an international exchange of different ideas and work methods. At the same time, the IU network gave me the opportunity to make contact with students, professors and professionals in the field of aviation. The network I was able to establish there made studying far away from home easier for me: on the one hand, the support of friends from all over the world, whom I met during my studies, and on the other hand, of course, the support of the university staff, who were always very helpful.
International Career: Joining Qatar Airways
To acquire practical experience in aviation, I completed internships at Menzies Aviation in London and at Lufthansa Consulting GmbH in Frankfurt. The selection process for both internships was quite long, but thanks to the high-quality academic background, I did well in the selection process and was accepted. After finishing my degree, I found out that Qatar Airways was recruiting new graduates on the IU campus and applied there. Despite a large number of applicants, I prevailed and now work as Pricing Analyst at Qatar Airways in Doha. I am currently responsible for setting QR Cargo pricing guidelines for the regions of origin and managing the sales organisation to maximise network margins.
You’ll find all of the important information about your study programme and IU in your personal brochure.
